This is a Gibson Style Varitone switch like the ones used in Gibson Lucille, ES335…

Where several Varitone builders use 1.5 Henry inductions this switch uses a value of at least 10 times higher, just like the original Gibson inductions.
This makes the BQmusic Varitone sound the way it should: open transparent sounds with scooped mids.

Build on an Alpha rotary switch with audio grade Xicon and Panasonic foil capacitors this is one great Varitone.

In the "off" position the Varitone has no effect. From position two to six more and more mid frequencies are scooped, leaving only the lows and highs.

At some point in the 60's Gibson used faulty ceramic resistor networks in their Varitones. These resistor networks accidentally also worked as a capacitor and darkened the overall sound. This has lead to the general idea that Varitones are tone suckers which is absolutely not true. In the "off" position a Varitone has absolutely no capacitance at all and the internal resistance is 8 times higher than the resistance of the volume pots!

The real tone suckers are the standard tone pots. If you need a bit more clarity and detail in your sound you may want to replace them with no-load tone pots.
